Marjorie Willann Marshell

Marjorie Willann (Staufer) Marshell, 96 of Batesville, passed away March 15, 2019 at Woodlawn Nursing Home.

Marjorie was born January 13, 1923 to William and Martha Ann Staufer of Moorefield, Arkansas. The youngest child of four, she was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Rachel Gilbert and Myrl Griffin, and brother, Paul Staufer.

Marjorie graduated from Sulphur Rock High School where she played on the women’s varsity basketball team. She was married on September 29, 1944 to Adlai K. Marshell of Batesville, who preceded her in death in 1993.

After working at Sterling Stores for more than 30 years, she worked as the Independence County Delinquent Tax Collector before retiring. She loved to cook for friends, family and neighbors and was famous for her pies and cornbread dressing. Always a soft touch for animals, she took in more than her fair share of strays and gave them a loving home. Marjorie was a member of Central Avenue United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Mona Hughes (Robert), grandson Will Hughes (Miranda), granddaughter Sally Hughes, one great grandson, Logan Wade Hughes, all of Little Rock, a nephew and two nieces.

Visitation will be at Qualls Batesville Funeral Service on Tuesday, March 19 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. immediately followed by a graveside service at Oaklawn Cemetery in Batesville. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to CARE for Animals, P. O. Box 7604, Little Rock, AR 72217-7604 or a charity of choice.
